Quicken Trust update: Winnie Kubiita

We are delighted to share this update from Winnie Kubiita (Dorter, 2008-2011), one of Bede’s Quicken Trust Scholars. She is now working as a qualified nurse in Uganda.

Hello to my friends in the UK, this is Winnie Kubiita from Uganda.

I thought I would update you on what I am doing now after my scholarship at Bede’s and returning home. I now work as a professional enrolled nurse in a rural health clinic in the village where I was born. I’m not yet married and I don’t have any kids, but I am staying in my own home near my workplace and my sister's daughter (who is 6 years old) lives with us. I wonder how my success became true?

It was a great opportunity for me and my family to come to the UK on a scholarship at Bede's. I had never thought about this possible because no one in my family had ever lived or studied abroad, so it was a great miracle!

It was like a dream to hear it with my own ears, and to see it with my own eyes! The journey to the UK by a plane was amazing, and I even had to pinch myself several times to prove I wasn’t dreaming! When I finally arrived in the UK, I started to ask myself if this was the heaven they had talked about, because the country was absolutely amazing, well organized, modernised and beautiful.

To begin with I was extremely shy, and was afraid of talking to my fellow school pupils and staff, but later on I gained more confidence. During my GCSE exams, I had a break and went to Inglewood Nursing Home in Eastbourne for 2 weeks’ work experience. I learned some good things there, including how to utilize my time well, how to handle patients with love and care, and how to act promptly and punctually.

From the experience of being supported and cared for by many lovely people in the UK, I am now looking after my mother and my entire family at large. I pay some school fees and necessities for my brother and sisters, and I’m so happy and proud to be a qualified nurse! I owe my success to Quicken Trust, Bede's, some lovely sponsors such as Jennie Taylor, and Mark and Vanessa Redhouse, who welcomed me into their UK home in the holidays, and to so many others. I want to thank you very much for the great love you showed to me.
