Music is at the heart of life at Bede’s Prep School.
Throughout the year, every child is given the opportunity to become familiar with music in a range of styles, singing and playing all types of music from all around the world and from different times in history – we are experienced musical globetrotters and time-travellers!
In the classroom, all pupils are enabled to perform, improvise, compose and develop their understanding of music through listening and appraising. These key skills prepare all children for their education beyond the Prep School, developing abilities which support success in foreign languages, mathematics, English, science – and, of course, music.
As every child's Prep School years are very much a time for trying things out, we also have a structured programme for developing instrumental music at Bede’s.
Children are given the opportunity to explore a range of instruments and we offer taster lessons, free instruments to get started and the chance for children to ‘find their sound’.
Specialist tuition in classical, jazz and pop styles is available on all standard instruments, with a team of visiting teachers complementing the full-time staff.
Performing is hugely important to musical development and each age-group has the chance to perform informally – perhaps in one of our ‘Pop-Up Concerts’, or in class or in assembly – or in a more formal recital or concert in the evening.
We also take our music-making into the wider community and love being part of larger-scale events in Eastbourne and Sussex, and are extraordinarily passionate about singing.
Finally, the Co-Curricular programme is overflowing with choirs, bands, orchestra and smaller instrumental groups that act as an extension of classroom lessons.
“ Music is a fundamental part of my life, and I want it to become the beating heart of Bede’s Prep. As Plato says, ‘Music gives a soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination and life to everything’ ”

“In the words of Ludwig van Beethoven, Music is a higher revelation than all wisdom and philosophy. That's not to say that all wisdom and philosophy aren't great too, of course!”
