As each child begins their final educational journey at Bede's Prep School, there are always a multitude of factors to consider - the list is seemingly endless!
Choices range from selecting and applying for scholarships, visiting and applying to Senior Schools (for those who are still undecided about where they want to go next) and plenty of practical considerations about how the year will work in terms of preparation for final exams and coursework.
Although every year in a child's development is an important one, whether it be pre-preparatory, preparatory or senior, Year 8 is a particularly significant stepping stone in the independent education system.
This is because, during Year 8, the children get a real taste of external exams, whether it be Academic Scholarships or Common Entrance for entry into their chosen Senior Schools.
The jump from Year 7 to 8 is also a little larger than some imagine, where independent learning, self-discipline, managing expectations and organisation are key to ensuring success.
Bede's uniquely holistic approach to education remains a vital part of Year 8 of course, whether it be partaking in the extensive Co-Curricular Programme or representing the school in sport, music or public speaking.
Year 8 is also the period in which we see our pupils take on greater responsibilities by becoming Prefects, often representing the school at functions, events and undertaking other duties around the school.
During the year, the demands of external exams and scholarships often feel very real for the children and we therefore take huge pride in our welfare system, through which children are monitored, nurtured and provided with strategies to ensure every step of their journey is manageable and - dare I say it - fun.
Although a busy academic year awaits them, it will be a balanced one, full of trips and concluding with the ‘Leavers’ Programme’ in June - a diverse and innovative programme designed to give maximum enjoyment whilst broadening and enriching their learning in unforgettable, often quite muddy ways...
