Years 3 and 4

During Year 3 and Year 4, children have such wonderfully open minds about the world around them.

It is an exciting time for every girl and boy and, in our experience, their hunger and love for learning develop even further across these two years. It is a privilege to be part of this process, and to witness the children make new discoveries and extend their knowledge.

Our aim over these first two years in the main school is to increase their confidence, both in terms of their learning skills and emotional resilience. We nurture the children so that they are ready to take risks in their learning and make further new discoveries, supporting and enabling them to grow into well grounded, caring and inquisitive individuals.

The move from Year 2, in Holywell, to Year 3, in the main Bede's Prep School building, is probably the largest step that the children take during their educational journey at Bede’s.

This important transition process begins during the summer term, with Year 2 having a number of their lessons delivered in the main school classrooms by our Year 3 teachers.

This process provides the children with an insight to life in the main school and helps everyone to feel more confident with the next step in their school journey.

In contrast, the step for Year 3 pupils into Year 4 is probably the easiest they will come across.

During both Year 3 and Year 4, the children’s learning is topic-based, with a different topic each term. The Year 3 and Year 4 pupils have the benefit of being taught most of their lessons by their Form Teachers, who also work closely with our Academic Heads of Department to ensure that their subjects are woven into our schemes of work.

There are many educational trips and visits that the children make to different venues throughout the year, each in support of their termly topics, including to Eastbourne Town Hall, Brighton Sealife Centre, Brighton Pavilion and Museum and Residential Trips in the Summer Term.

All in all then, Years 3 and 4 are an exciting and fulfilling time for the children’s journey through Bede’s, and it is a huge privilege for all of their teachers - myself included - to play such a crucial part in guiding them along this fantastic path of discovery.

Bede’s is a very caring school, where children are allowed to grow and develop as individuals. Being able to know the children so well makes their learning so personalised. It’s fabulous.

My ultimate goal is to nurture pupils so that when they leave Bede’s they are happy and healthy, confident and thoughtful, caring and respectful and - needless to say - creative and ambitious!

I love the push to keep learning, to keep discovering new questions and to help students discover their own questions.
