Bede's has a reputation for excellence in Football and Cricket, and rightly so, but this does not mean that we do not produce strong Rugby sides.

We have been Sussex County Champions on 3 occasions in the last 15 years and as recently as 2009 had an unbeaten season. Only last season our 1st XV were unbeaten in our 8 matches leading into Christmas and they lost narrowly in the Sussex Cup semi final to the eventual winners.

Our U9's went one better and went through the whole season undefeated!

Rob Buchanan, a former 1st XV Captain, currently plays for Harlequins, and Joel Harvey, another Prep School 'alumni', has this year been selected to play England 'sevens'

We start rugby as early as Year 1 and use the rugby 'continuum' to gradually develop from indoor 'touch', through to 'Tag' rugby in Year 3, and eventually on to the full 15-a-side game in Years 7 and 8.

We very much want our boys to enjoy their rugby and in the early years in particular the lessons are game based and fun. We try and coach through conditioned games rather than repetitive drills, while recognising the need for both.

The great thing about rugby is that the game caters for all shapes and sizes. Everybody's role is different but vital to the smooth running and success of the team. It can be a physical game. It can be played in difficult winter conditions. It can be a challenge, but this serves only to heighten the satisfaction gained when a challenge has been met and conquered.

Every year we take the older players to Twickenham to watch England play, and if Rob Buchanan (Harlequins) and Joel Harvey (London Wasps) continue to impress then our annual trips to Twickenham might become even more special!

It is the pupils that make my job so enjoyable. Every day they make me smile and it is only fair that I give them all I can in return.
