Hockey: Bede’s Prep School Boys and Girls 1st Teams both claim County Championships

On February 25 school hockey teams from across Sussex came together to compete at the 'In 2 Hockey' County Tournament, with Bede's Prep School's boys' and girls' 1st teams both winning their respective competitions and being crowned county champions.

In the boys' competition, which took place at Summerdown, the Bede's Prep School 1st team beat Hurstpierpoint College 6-0, Lewes Old Grammar 3-0, St Andrews 3-0 and Ardingly 3-2 in a hard fought final.

Top goal scorers across the tournament were Bede's pupils Harry Wootten and Luca Page.

The girls' teams competed at Beresford meanwhile, with the Bede's Prep School 1st team beating Farlington 3-1 in the semi-finals in a nail-biting penalty flick-off. This earned them a place in the girls' final where they too competed against Ardingly.

"The last two goals in the girls' final were fantastic," said Petch Pyemont, Head of Hockey at Bede's Prep School. "Accurate passing from the girls combined with strong running with the ball, skilful stick work and a superb reverse pass resulted in two of the best goals I have seen for a while."

The final result of the hotly contested girls' final was 4-2 to Bede's Prep School.

This double-county championship win is a remarkable achievement by Bede's Prep School, an institution which provides several players to the Sussex county side. From the Bede's Prep School 1st team girls' side alone these included Amelia Baron, Lauren Bennett and Charlotte Brown.

"We are extremely proud of our Hockey teams," said Bede's Prep School Headmaster Mr Nick Bevington of the wins. "These latest victories are yet more evidence of the expertly crafted sporting provision at our school."
