Tennis: Success at Sussex County Championships
Nearly 800 Sussex tennis players competed for their schools throughout the summer months in the Sussex County Tennis Championships, which were hosted this year by Bede's School.
Over a series of nine days, from March until June, young tennis players from across the county battled the wind, rain and occasional sunshine to see if their school could take trophies in each of the nine age groups, from Under 7 to Under 18.
On each of these days the teams were made up of four players who competed in the Boys or Girls events.
The Championships commenced on 8th March with the Under7 and 8 Events. The trophies for the Mini Tennis for both Boys and Girls went to the Bede's teams.
May 2nd then saw the turn of the Under 18 age group, with Bede's again taking both winning trophies.
On 7th May the Under 9's took to the courts and saw the Bede's Boys victorious, and in the same week the Under 16 tournament took place with both the Bede's Boys and Girls teams claiming the titles.
The Under 11 competition was also fought out in May, with Bede's winning the Boys event. By this time the normal Schools Tennis Season was in full flow, and May 16th saw the Under 10 Event where Bede's won the Boys.
On June 6th, the Under 14 Event was staged and the Bede's Boys won their event.
The final tournament of the season then took place on June 13th, with Bede's winning both the Boys and Girls Under 15 titles.
Julie Salmon, ex-England international player, ex-Bede's pupil and Director of Tennis at the school said after the competition, "We saw fine tennis being played by so many budding young stars and fair play over all the days. Enormous thanks must go out to all who competed and to their teachers."
