Football: U13 Boys Victorious at Ardingly Tournament
Bede's U13 Footballers started the season with a stunning set of performances at the annual Ardingly Football Tournament, winning not only every game but scoring 23 goals and only conceding one.
The day began with an opening match against Copthorne. The match ended with a narrow 1-0 victory in which the boys finishing let them down somewhat. The goal came when Gordon intercepted, dribbled into midfield and passed to Sampson. He cut the ball back for Carter to score.
In the second game, against Windlesham, the U13s pulled ahead early and dominated the match 8-0, and in the third Brighton was pipped to the post 1-0.
The fourth match was another comfortable 7-0 victory against Duke of Kent School, which comfortably qualified the team for the Semi-Finals against hosts Ardingly.
Despite a sloppy start, the boys drove home a 4-1 victory with goals from Gibson, Carter and Collins.
The final, against St Andrew's, was a very close match in which Bede's spurned a few chances in the first half and were thankful to Orr for some excellent goalkeeping - once when a St Andrew's forward was clean through and he came out smother the ball and the second time from a free kick when he punched and then collected the incoming shot.
The winning goal came from the U13s impressive captain, Gibson. Orr came out quickly to gather a ball played forward and the boys counter attacked. Lambird received the ball on the right hand side of the box and sent in a cross. This was partly cleared by their goalkeeper, but Gibson volleyed into the roof of the net.
Bede's Prep School's new Headmaster Giles Entwisle said of the performance, "I am proud of the U13s for not only playing so very well but for also taking the right attitude out onto the pitch. Let us hope the rest of the season continues as it has begun."
