Hockey: U11 and U13 Boys Win County and South East Regional Championships

On Monday, Tonbridge School played host to 24 Under 13s teams from all over the South-East, with Bede's Prep's 1sts returning to defending their South East Regional title.

Meanwhile, the U11 boys 'Colts' team were battling it out on a separate astroturf for a place in their own South East Regional Competition, competing in the Sussex County Cup.

In the U13s Tournament, victories came in the form of a 2-0 win against South Lee School and a 6-0 victory against Aldwickbury, a 3-1 quarter final victory over New Beacon and a 2-1 semi-final win against Parkside, clearing away for a final against Hazelgrove School. During the matches goals were scored by Scott Lenham, Ollie Carter, Tom Collins and Archie Collett.

During the final, Bede's and Hazelgrove could not be separated in normal time, with a final score line of 0-0 meaning the Regional title was be decided on 'penalty shuffles.'

Henry Jones in goal saved 2 vital penalties to seal the 1sts a journey to Millfield School for the National Finals.

The U13s were coached for the day by Bede's Senior School's Director of Hockey and ex-England Hockey coach Jon Royce who said, "Our initial target was to progress into the Cup competition, rather than the 'Plate', or 'Vase'. To become Regional Champions for the second year running is an incredible achievement and is a credit to both the players and Mrs Petch Lenham, the team's coach.

The Bede's Colts meanwhile won all five of their matches, which included a 3-0 victory against Ocklynge, a 5-0 victory against Seaford College Prep School, a 2-0 semi-final victory against Ardingly Prep School and a 3-0 victory in the final against local rivals St Andrew's Prep School, with the team scoring 15 goals and conceding none.

With Bede's Under 11s top scorers Archie, Jack, Charley and Aiden making some strong tackles and great strikes to score super goals, the Colts performance throughout the day was, according to Bede's Prep School's Head of Games Sharon Muxworthy, "a demonstration of Bede's Hockey at its very best."

At a follow-up Hurstpierpoint College Prep School Tournament on Wednesday, Bede's Colts also made a brave attempt to retain the HCPS Trophy, demonstrating some outstanding defending and controlled proceedings in the midfield.

After 3-0, 4-0 and 6-1 victories against Seaford College, Cranliegh B's and Hurst, Bede's Colts faced Cranleigh A's in the final and drew 2-2, losing out 2-3 on penalties.

The Colts coach and Bede's Prep Schools Head of Physical Education Chris Atherton said of the U11s recent performance, "The boys did fantastically well to become County Champions at the tournament on Monday and it took a school from Surrey to come down and deny us a second tournament win at HCPS, but it was by the slightest of margins!"

Head of Hockey at Bede's Prep Petch Lenham added, "The boys have all showed discipline, determination and excellent attitudes this week, and I am very proud of them."

Bede's Director of Sport and International Olympic Committee delegate Andrew Hibbert added, "After such a stellar Football season in the autumn and brilliant run on the Rugby pitch into last half of term, I think it is fair to predict great things from these young sportsmen in the coming years."

The Bede's Prep Colts now look forward to the South East Regional Championships, which will take place on 10th March, while the U13s are now preparing for the National Championships in May.
