Rugby: Bede’s 1st XI Meet The Springboks

Last week our Head of Rugby Mr Atherton took five Bede’s Prep Rugby players to meet the South African national Rugby Team and watch them train.

The Springboks were staying at The Grand Hotel in Eastbourne in preparation for their opening World Cup match against Japan on Saturday at The Amex Stadium in Brighton; little did they know at the time that Japan would put up such a spirited fight!

The five lucky Bedians watched the closing stages of the Springbok’s training session and then met the players afterwards, briefly discussing Rugby tactics and talking about life as a professional athlete.

Mr Atherton said of the day, “Meeting the likes of Tendai 'The Beast' Mtawarira, Schalk Brits and Francois Louw is a brilliant way to get the children excited about Rugby. The Prep School community is naturally following the World Cup very closely and anticipating the start of our own Rugby season with understandable relish.”

Bede’s Director of Sport and Team GB Chef de Mission Andy Hibbert added, “Bede’s may be known more as a Football school than a Rugby school, but we love our Rugby too – as can be evidenced by the accomplishments of alumni including Rob Buchanan and Josh Novell.”

He continued, “Meeting any international-standard player is always a thrill. I imagine these young Bedians will never forget the experience.”
