Maths: A Beautiful Place for Place Value
As part of Bede’s Prep School’s Beach School scheme, Mrs Balmer and I moved our Year 3 Maths lessons outdoors this week, transposing the children’s learning from pens and paper into sand and pebbles.
After a short walk to begin the sessions, the pupils paired up and drew place value grids in the sand, testing each other’s knowledge on decimal places from 1 to 1000.
Everyone had fun, demonstrated their understanding successfully, and felt liberated from our classrooms – not least because they have been made somewhat stuffy by of the hottest Septembers in recent memory!
We are all now looking forward to our next fortnightly Beach School session – although we will have to wait and see whether it will be quite so sunny next time around…
