Football: U12/U13 As and Bs Show Great Spirit in Bede's Challenge Shield
Bede's hosted its annual U12/U13 Prep School 8-a-side tournament, the Bede's Challenge Shield, on Saturday 9 September.
The teams were split into two groups with Bede’s A, Hurstpierpoint, Hazelwood and St Christopher’s making up group A, and Great Walstead, Lancing Prep, Handcross Park, Bede’s B and Skipper’s Hill making up group B.
St Christopher’s topped group A winning all their games, and playing a very attractive brand of football, Hazelwood just pipped Bede’s A to 2nd with Hurstpierpoint finishing in 4th. In Group B Lancing Prep topped the group, with their attacking players causing havoc in opposition defenses. Great Walstead, who have won the tournament the last two years, finished runners up, Handcross Park 3rd, Bede’s B 4th and Skippers 5th.
The tournament then progressed into the knockout rounds. In a very tight cup semi-final St Christopher’s edged past Great Walstead 1-0, and in the other game Lancing Prep more comfortably beat Hazelwood 2-0.
Both Bede’s teams qualified for the Plate semi-final and were drawn in the semi-final against one another. The upset of the day occurred when Bede’s B beat Bede’s A 2-0 which saw them progress to the final. The other semi-final went to extra time before Hurstpierpoint edged out Handcross Park.
In the cup final, favourites St Christopher’s fell behind early on to a well worked Lancing Prep goal, before storming back to win 2-1 and win the competition for the first time.
In the plate Bede’s B were beating Hurstpierpoint until they equalised 1-1 after extra time. It was left to penalties to decide, and after 6 penalties each Bede’s missed and Hurstpierpoint scored seeing them claim victory.
Mr Caryer, Director of Football said of the tournament, “It was great to see so many children out enjoying the challenges and drama of tournament football. The spirit and attitude shown by all the players and coaches was excellent and in the end I think we had two very deserving winners of both trophies.”
