Music: Event Reviews

Last week saw two wonderful music events take place at Bede's Prep.

On Saturday 14 October, Bede's Prep welcomed children and parents for its second Family Fun Music Morning, following the success of its debut in May.  Our families arrived to the enticing strains of the professional jazz band recruited for the event:  Simon Savage who led the session on saxophone and keyboard, with Andy Williams and Dan McKinna on guitars and Angus Bishop on drums.

But of course the main musicians were the children and parents who participated so willingly in music-making for an hour.  Relaxing into the blues rhythm and the chord sequences of C-Jam Blues, Simon expertly led the families on a time-travelling musical journey from the jazz of the 1920s to the rock ‘n’ roll beats of the 1960s with James Brown’s iconic classic 'Night Train'.  Everyone joined in and there were some inspiring improvisations from Olivia, Paddy, Leona, Ruth, Enzo and Sam.

The sheer pleasure of making music together was evident throughout the session and it was super to see so many parents and staff joining in with the children with such enthusiasm.  A big thank you to Simon and the professional musicians for leading such a fantastic morning. Roll on next May for FFMM3!

In addition to the Music Morning, our Pre-Prep Children entertained friends and families with their first concert of the year, on Thursday 19 October.

Performing to an enthusiastically appreciative audience, the children presented a varied programme of songs and group instrumental items which took us on an imaginative journey through moving and travelling songs, animal songs, giraffes, gruffalos and even a Teddy Bears’ Picnic.  Lots of the songs featured actions, to stimulate the kinaesthetic responses in these young singers, and there were plenty of lively rhythms to keep toes tapping all around the theatre.

The Year 2 children have been learning the recorder and they performed Merrily We roll Along with the Year 1 ukulele group, followed by Glory B and BB Blues.  Mrs Dodridge joined the Pre-Prep violinists to perform pieces which used both pizzicato and arco techniques, demonstrated beautifully by Stephanie, Aida, Nina, Izzy and Elie.

The grade finale took us all the way to Hawaii with each class playing their ukuleles to accompany the traditional Hawaiian song Kapulu Kane.  Everyone wore a colourful lei – a traditional Hawaiian welcome flower garland – and with the flowing hand movements and the evocative sound of the ukulele ensembles, we really did feel a wave of relaxation as the concert came to an end and half-term beckoned.  A big thank you to our wonderful children for a fantastic performance.
