Year 3 Meet the Mayor

4

This week, Year 3 enjoyed a fascinating guided tour of Eastbourne Town Hall and the Mayor’s Parlour.

The children were shown paintings of Eastbourne’s early Mayors, Cllr George Ambrose Wallis being the first in 1883, and also learnt that Eastbourne’s first female Mayor, Cllr Alice Hudson, was elected in 1926, two years before all women had the right to vote in the country.

The current Mayor, Cllr Gill Mattock (The 16th female Mayor of Eastbourne), very kindly held a question and answer session with Year 3, in the former Council Chamber, giving the children a clear insight into her role.

Following this, we then moved to the Mayor’s office where she showed the children her ceremonial robes and gave a detailed explanation about the Mayor’s gold chain of office, along with information about the mace and the mace bearer’s role.  A very interesting and informative morning was had by all in which Year 3 learnt a great deal about the importance of being Mayor.
