Illustrators Visit Bede's Prep for Book Week
Launching the start of Book Week at Bede’s Prep were visits from comic artist and award-wining Manga illustrator, Sonja Leong and author/illustrator, Tony De Saulles.
On Monday 8 October, Sonja Leong delighted Years 7 and 8 with a lively talk on the Manga industry before leading practical and pacey workshops. Sonia Leong demonstrated step-by step techniques to creating Manga characters leaving many children and staff astonished at their finished accomplished pieces!
One pupil said afterwards, "I really enjoyed our workshop with the illustrator. Her drawings are very clever and I didn't realise there was so much involved. I really enjoy art and I am going to practice her techniques."
Following from this, Tony De Saulles visited children in Years 3 to 6. Tony De Saulles is illustrator of the well-known and popular series Horrible Science books as well as writer and illustrator of his new popular series of stories, Bee Boy. Throughout the day, children and staff were treated to lively illustration workshops that not only showed us how to create line-drawn cartoon creatures that featured in his books, but also informed us a little more about the fascinating natural world in which we live.
We came away agreeing with Tony’s De Saulles’ message to us all: "Everybody can draw and write if they want to. It's just a matter of practise. Practice, practice, PRACTICE!"
Here is what the children said about Tony's session:
"It was very nice to get to draw with an illustrator"
"It was fun getting tips form a professional illustrator as I like drawing"
"I enjoyed seeing the fossil and actually watching him draw"
"He used lots of facts and had great ideas and information"
