Bede's Prep Celebrates Successful Hockey Season
Our Prep Hockey Programme this year has been hugely successful.
We have had fixtures from U9 all the way through to U13 for our Boys and Girls with very high participation numbers across the two terms. All four of our competition groups qualified to represent Sussex at the South of England round of the National Cup, being the only school across the South of England to represent their county for both genders at U11 and U13 level. The U11 Boys won their Sussex Cup for the second time in the last three years. The U13 Girls placed Top 8 in the South of England after qualifying as Runners-Up in Sussex whilst also qualifying for the IAPS National Schools Finals and the U13 Boys placed 11th in the South after being crowned Sussex Champions for the third successive year.
Our Girls programme has grown substantially through our newly-formed partnership with Eastbourne Hockey Club, whereby a number of our pupils now play a full club season in 11-a-side teams, coached by Bede’s staff. The exposure to the full-sized pitch has not only helped our pupils to realise space better and rise to the challenges to cope with the physical demands of the full-sized game, however it also better prepares them for Hockey life after Bede’s Prep where the game is played on an 11-a-side scale.
Our Boys programme has equally grown through extending our season to the entire Spring term. This extra contact time has allowed our pupils to access more hours at training, more fixtures vs local opposition and as such the quality of our individual players has improved across the board. Like our girls programme, this aids us to prepare our pupils for life post-Bede’s Prep to be able to adapt their hockey skills to a full term’s activity. Some pupils have also been able to access club Hockey down at Eastbourne Hockey club representing their junior boys sides across a full Hockey season.
Across both terms, the boys and girls have played with smiles on their faces and with a real passion for the sport, realising that success isn’t just winning tournaments, rather to develop as an individual working to improve themselves each time they step onto the Hockey pitch. It has been a pleasure to work with such an enthusiastic coaching staff across the two terms who help to deliver this message and the love for the game.
