Art School

The artistic legacy of The Dicker has been enhanced and refined constantly - a philosophy epitomised by the Bede's Art School.

Pupils in all years take Art at Bede's, with approximately 100 pupils studying GCSE Art at a given time (including Art and Design, Photography and Ceramics) and the same again taking Art A Levels.

Although it started relatively small, the remarkably successful department has steadily expanded, growing most during the 1980's to accommodate the rapid increase in students taking Art-based subjects.

More recently, following the completion of the Sports Complex in 2007, the old school gym was converted into two bright and airy Art rooms and over the subsequent years the large ground-floor classroom was also made part of the Art School.

Minor changes to some rooms were made in 2011 to accommodate new teaching facilities and install the Victorian Printing Press, which weighs well over a tonne; the floor had to be reinforced to take its weight!

Throughout this period Mr David Graham was the Art School's primary champion, with 2012 seeing his retirement after 30 years of dedicated service as a Teacher, Housemaster and Head of Faculty.

A complete re-roofing of the Art School took place in the Summer of 2014, with a second darkroom and storage area being constructed in 2013.

The Bede's Art School now consists of 11 teaching rooms including two darkrooms, one dedicated computer graphics suite and two ceramics studios.

These rooms, in turn, contain a dedicated Art Library and Mac server, several iMac computer suites (encompassing over 40 machines), a colour photocopier, a selection of 20 standard, slide and A3 flatbed scanners, 2 Wacom Bamboo A5 Graphic Tablets, a vast selection of printers (including 2 Large Format A2 professional proofing inkjets), airbrushes with silent compression, a selection of smart boards and projectors and much, much more.

The Bede's Art School has won 6 Good Schools Guide Gold Awards for Graphics since 2004, and in 2013 Bede's Photography students, under the guidance of Miss Excell, won, were runners up and were 'highly commended' in a number of categories of a national competition run by the exam board, Edexcel.
