Sports Leadership Award
Bede’s is very excited to offer the Sports Leaders UK (SLUK) Level 2 Qualification in Sports Leadership as part of our Bede’s Diploma programme for Lower Sixth pupils.
Sport plays a fundamental part of life at Bede’s, and through introducing the SLUK we continue to develop the nationally-recognised programme with our world-class facilities.
Over 90,000 young people take part in the SLUK Qualifications and Awards each year, providing the opportunity for improvement of vital skills and employability prospects of young people. At Bede’s the first cohort (2017-18) successfully completed the qualification in June 2018, with 19 pupils awarded the Level 2. The SLUK qualifications and programmes are nationally recognised and accredited to help young people flourish in education and employment; in particular they are recognised by universities.
At Bede’s, we offer the Level 2 Qualification in Sports Leadership, a one-year course offered as an alternative to the EPQ programme in the Lower Sixth. The Sports Leadership programme is designed to develop confident, healthy leaders through sport and physical activity.
Some of the benefits of the SLUK Qualifications (research carried out by SLUK):
- Improved teamwork: 96% of pupils said they learned valuable team-working skills
- Improved employability: 94% of learners believed they were more employable
- Improved communication: 98% of teachers said it increased their pupils’ communication skills
- Improved attainment: 70% of Head teachers said attainment in other subjects increased
- Improved leadership: 98% said it improved their pupils’ ability to lead others
The programme runs for one academic year, using four scheduled lessons in the two-week timetable to deliver the content of the course through fun sessions of engaging activities with other pupils and within the community. Pupils will learn to plan, lead and evaluate a range of sporting activity sessions over a number of tutored hours, and then demonstrate their leadership skills as part of their assessment. Pupils are required to deliver a minimum of 10 hours of sports leadership at Bede’s.
The course is focused on developing the Bede’s ethos of encouraging and supporting pupils in the pursuit of their ambitions through mass participation as well as developing sporting excellence. During the timetabled lessons, pupils take part in a range of leadership opportunities from planning and leading FUNdamental key skills to local primary school pupils such as Park Mead and Pevensey and Westham, to developing their confidence, knowledge and understanding of leading and officiating competitive sports such as supporting the Bede’s Independent Association of Prep Schools (IAPS) fixtures.
