Animal Management: ABWAK Symposium 2013

If Nature is diverse, so too are zoo keepers.

P1050703At the start of March eleven Bede's Animal Management Sixth Formers and accompanying staff discovered this when they flew to Scotland to attend the 2013 symposium of ABWAK, the Association of British and Irish Wild Animal Keepers.

More than one hundred other delegates from all over the UK met at Edinburgh Zoo to attend an assortment of informative lectures and explore behind the scenes. These provided a fascinating insight into wild animal husbandry on a large scale.

To mark the zoo's centenary, the Royal Zoological Society of Scotland is making a huge investment in both pandas and penguins, as well as enlarging its Highland Wildlife Park in the Cairngorm Mountains.

For many of us, this excursion was the highlight of the three-day trip; few have been fortunate enough to get seriously close to Siberian tigers, wolves and polar bears. It was indeed a memorable weekend, thanks to meticulous planning by Mr Juniper, the Head of the school's Animal Management Department.
