Charity Fundraising: Bede’s China Earthquake Appeal
A cohort of 8 Bede's Senior School boarders have been running a campaign raising disaster relief for the 12,000 people affected by the devastating Ya'an earthquake which took place on 20 April.
The magnitude 7.0 disaster caused serious damage to Ya'an in the Si Chuan province of China. It was quickly announced that 196 people were confirmed dead, 24 missing, and at least 11,826 were injured.
In response to the humanitarian crisis developing in Ya'an a group of Chinese girls in Crossways House at Bede's began donating funds to help and made a Youtube video to raise awareness of the tragedy.
As the Bede's Ya'an Earthquake fund grew at the School the girls then organized a charity event, selling home-made Chinese food to fellow students and asking for donations from the public.
So far the campaign has raised over £2000.
The group, which includes Ivy Jiang in Crossways House, Yang Cui and Gigi Cheung from Dorter House, Bryan Kwan in Camberlot House, Jason Wong and Jacky Cheung from Dorms House and Bruce Zhen from Stud House, released a statement on Monday.
"We would like to thank everyone that has helped and been so supportive," they said.
"This has been the most wonderful demonstration of the compassion of the human spirit, and has shown how a community, when it works together, it can achieve wonderful things."
