Rugby: Rob Buchanan to make First Class international debut
2009 leaver and ex-Head of School Rob Buchanan was selected for the 2013 England squad yesterday, and will join 11 uncapped England players for this summer's tour to Uruguay and Argentina.
Rob, who currently plays as a Hooker for Harlequins, represented England for two years at U18 and U19 level while at Bede's and played in the Six Nations U18 tournament during his Upper Sixth year.
Known amongst his peer group as "calm, consistent and reliable," Rob was at Bede's for 7 years, joining the Prep School in Year 6.
The news of Rob's selection coincided with the decision to rest England captain Chris Robshaw for the three-match summer tour. Flanker Tom Wood will lead the youthful party in his stead while Toby Flood, Danny Care, Brad Barritt and Chris Ashton are also rested.
England Coach Stuart Lancaster said of the squad, "A few are being rested after a hard campaign but they will be considered by the British & Irish Lions should they be required."
"We feel we've got the balance right and have given places to a number of players who have shone in the Aviva Premiership this season, one or two who have been on the fringes for a while, and several players who have been involved over the last year or so. This is everyone's chance to step up."
The Lions head off to tour Australia later this month with their first game against the Barbarians in Hong Kong on Saturday 1 June.
England also face the Barbarians at Twickenham on May 26, when they will field a team without players who feature in the Aviva Premiership final on the previous day.
The uncapped 11 players joining the squad this summer are Rob Buchanan (Harlequins), Calum Clark (Northampton), Matt Kvesic (Worcester), Ed Slater (Leicester), Henry Thomas (Sale), Billy Vunipola (London Wasps), Kyle Eastmond (Bath), Jonny May (Gloucester), Joel Tomkins (Saracens), Christian Wade (London Wasps), Marland Yarde (London Irish).
