Food and Nutrition: Georgina crowned Eastbourne Young Chef of the Year
Students from Ratton, Willingdon, Causeway and Bede's Senior Schools competed at the finals of Eastbourne Young Chef at Ratton School on Thursday 4 July; Georgina Callaghan, a Lower Fifth student from Bede's, claimed the title.
The competition, now in its eighteenth year, was organised by Eastbourne Education Business Partnership in conjunction with The Grand Hotel. The finalists, who each designed a 3-course menu based on a 'Summer Holiday' theme, had ninety minutes in which to prepare their main dish for judging.
"The standard and variety of entries this year was incredibly high which was a real credit to the finalists and their teachers. This made the job of judging a real challenge but very enjoyable", commented Keith Mitchell, Executive Chef at The Grand Hotel, who supervised the judging.
Andy Johnson, represented the Eastbourne Hospitality Association and Mark Fagan represented the Institute of Hospitality, whose two organisations had sponsored the event, also assisted Keith with judging.
Mentor chefs had previously supported the schools during their individual school heats. This provided a work-related dimension to the competition and additional support for the students and their teachers.
The two winners both received a special cup, prizes and lunch at the Grand Hotel. The remaining finalists each received a certificate and prizes 'in recognition of achievement'.
