Tennis: Bede’s Players Compete at National Finals
A cohort of 10 Bede's students earned the school its best rankings in five years at the Aegon Team Tennis Schools National Championships Finals 2013, where the top 16 boys and girls teams in Great Britain competed in Sheffield from Tuesday to Friday 12 July.
The competition was jointly organised by the Tennis Foundation and the Lawn Tennis Association (LTA) and aims to find the best school tennis team in the country.
The National Championships Finals is a compass draw of 16 teams, which means each school plays a match on each of the four days and finish between 1st and 16th in their event.
Bede's girls team of Helen Clements, Holly Thompson, Cassandra Qui, Anouska Greenway and Danni Marshall had a fantastic tournament, eventually finishing 7th overall.
The boys team of Logan Burgess-Hayes, Jack Burkill, Alex Abaza, Alex Romay and Daniel Ikoen finished 11th overall, with one of the youngest teams of the tournaments.
Director of Tennis at Bede's, former British No 1 Julie Salmon said of the teams' performances, "The rapport and spirit was fantastic, with all the Bede's players really showing depth and courage in their play to beat players ranked much higher than themselves. The tournament has been a fantastic learning curve for the teams, whom will reap invaluable rewards from this experience."
