Hockey: 2nd XI Competes at National Tournament

Hockey: U16 National Tournament in Eastbourne

On a glorious Autumn day the Bede's 2nd XI, consisting of a combined U15/16 Girls' hockey squad, made their way to Eastbourne for their tournament, hot off the heels of a 3-2 win against Moira House.

Aspirations were high and the girls were looking forward to trying their best and hopefully stealing a few draws and a win as they worked to continue their improvement this season.

Captain Coco Wilson kept morale high, despite a tough start to the draw, and the girls ensured their heads never dropped. They consistently sought opportunities to create space and counter their opposition, using their speed and passing out to their wide players.

Against Millais, in the third match, a fast attack expertly finished by Coco Wilson saw Bede's take the lead in the first five minutes. Millais came back strong with some good defence in the middle channel and quickly equalised with a good drive into the D (despite the best efforts GK Beth Thomas).

The match was well contested, G Callaghan consistently tackling and releasing to J Jeffery out wide which led to many positive attacks in the Millais final 25. Alas, a final attack by the Millais team saw them scoring a final goal to win the match overall.

It was good to finish the last game of the day with a draw as the team had clearly grown stronger throughout the day.

Notable performances were the saves by Beth Thomas in goal, the clean and consistently well-timed tackling by Georgina Callaghan and the great leadership and captaincy by Coco Wilson.

All the players worked hard and were supportive of each other throughout the day - they were a credit to one another and the school.
