House Cup: Dorter Wins House Music For Second Year
There was added pressure for this year's House Music competition, with the girls of Dorter striving hard to both up their game from last year and hang on to the trophy that they won in 2012.
This year's theme was ABBA, which enthused the staff especially bringing back those 70's and 80's memories, with the Big Song being "Money Money Money."
The girls took it upon themselves to get this performance pitch perfect for the big night. Practice every evening as a whole House for two weeks paid dividends as the girls mixed powerful volume and sweet harmonies, creating an electric formula to match the great 70's classic.
The performance on the night went fantastically, with great mass singing accompanied by the Dorter, Deis and Dorms staff showering the audience with 'Dorter money'.
The staff also matched the singing with a choreographed ABBA dancing performance that enabled them to go back 20 odd years!
Next up was the Small Choir, whose chosen song was "Lay all your love on me". Practices every break and lunchtime over the fortnight before brought the choir together and their chosen harmonies combined with subtle solos to create another strong performance.
The third element of the Dorter performance was a first first for house music: the Solo.
Performed by Sian Walsh, Porgi Amor from Le Nozze Di figaro went down a treat. The usually rocking Sports Complex fell silent as Sian sang beautifully with such ease, but in a powerful manner that blew everyone away.
The instrumental, traditionally the chance for all to get involved, was a modern favourite - Home by Phillip Phillips.
It was great to see every year group and almost every instrument type included in the group. The song was fun, energetic and certainly lived up to the Dorter family ethos.
All waited tentatively as the judges went off to consider the range of fabulous performances from a competition that had hit heights never reached before.
Dorter were awarded the accolade of Best Big Song, which was the reward the whole House wanted for all their hard work. Close finishes in the other categories meant we had a chance of the overall prize, but we faced tough competition from Charleston and Bloomsbury.
The evening was rounded off by the announcement we had hoped for when the judges awarded Dorter the prize for Overall Winners of House Music.
In summary, House Music 2013 was a brilliant night or brilliant music and we all look forward to next year when we hope to challenge for the hat trick of wins.
It will be tough, but the girls of Dorter will give it their best shot!
