Football: Bede’s Prep Claims Victory in Challenge Shield

Saturday 6th September saw the inaugural Bede's Football Challenge Shield held at Bede's Senior School.

The tournament consisted of 8 prep school teams split into two groups.  In Group A included Bede's A, Great Walstead, St Christopher's, and Holmewood House.  In group B was Bede's B, Skippers Hill, Brambletye and Hazelwood.

The group games were fiercely competitive with most games being decided by the narrowest of margins!

Great Walstead ended up topping group A with Bede's A finishing runner up while Hazelwood won group B with Bede's B finishing runners up.

These teams progressed to the semi-finals of the cup competition while Holmewood House, St Christopher's, Skippers Hill and Brambletye entered the plate competition.

Holmewood House came out the eventual winners of the plate in a close final against St Christopher's while, in the semi-finals of the Cup competition, Bede's A played well to progress passed Hazelwood whilst Great Walstead proved too strong for Bede's B.

Great Walstead and Bede's A met for the second time in the final, with the outcome of their group stage competition having been a 0-0 draw.

Bede's took the lead early in the second half and then soon doubled it from the penalty spot.  Great Walstead showed great courage and immediately replied making the final few minutes a very tense affair, however a smart finish in the dying seconds from the Bede's striker finally sealed the title for Bede's A.

Mr Caryer, Bede's Head of Football, commented, "It was an absolute pleasure to see so many boys out playing and enjoying their Football in a competitive environment and I am glad we had such good weather for the day.  All the teams played in the right spirit and the players were outstanding ambassadors for their schools."
