Jazz Band: Preparations Underway for Cabaret!

Since 2001 the Jazz band has been a very active ensemble within the Bede's Music department.

The band rehearses every Tuesday afternoon and we are working on a mix of tunes for the forthcoming Cabaret concert.

We are currently working on a dizzying variety of tunes, from an original from Mr Hilton, featuring Oliver Hutchinson, called "Bede's Boogie" to "Birdland" - a tune made famous by Weather Report.

From cabaret concerts, jazz evenings to Speech Day, the band performs a major concert program every term. It is for all levels of ability and we play repertoire from Duke Ellington and Count Basie through to James Brown.

We are very fortunate to have Mr Roy Hilton on the staff, who has arranged for TV and the west end, and he writes and arranges for the band. The other staff members who play in the band and guide the students have careers in the industry bring with them many years of experience.

This year we have a strong group of piano players whose interests range from boogie-woogie, (Oliver Hutchinson) to modern jazz (Jonathan Connell). We also have a very fine Guitarist in James Cuxson, who plays well beyond his years.

Our new drummer Oliver Prosper is adapting very well to the "hardest chair in the band" and we also welcome our new bass player: joining Bogdan Kagan is Matthew Grant.

The sax section includes Anna Moody for the first time on baritone Sax and Anna Dagwell doubling on clarinet, welcoming Stevie Mefan playing lead Alto and Angus Bartlett on Tenor Sax.

The trumpets and trombones are sounding very strong this year, with Aiden Kerr playing lead and Charlie Muston playing some fine solos.
