New Director of Dance Appointed

Bede's is delighted to announce the appointment of Mr Lee Smikle as our next Director of Legat.

Mr Smikle, who will take up the post in April, is a hugely exciting appointment and confirms Legat’s place and potential in the dance world.

Mr Smikle is a dance teacher, choreographer, producer, mentor and artistic director – there is no doubt that he will bring energy, vitality and an in-depth understanding of today’s dance world to our dancers.

Mr Smikle is highly thought of throughout the dance world and joins us with a reputation for innovation and expertise, especially in contemporary dance.

He is currently the Resident Artists for Matthew Bourne’s New Adventures and Associate Artist in Residence at ‘Rich Mix’, a cultural arts venue in East London.

Mr Smikle has founded his own company, Shoreditch Youth Dance for young people, as well as establishing ‘Free to Fall’ a development programme for artists and producers.

Mr Smikle is well known by our pupils, having taught as a guest teacher at Legat these past two terms.

Bede's Headmaster Dr Richard Maloney said, "We are very fortunate to have secured Mr Smikle's services and I know Legat will continue to move forward under his leadership, just as it has done during Mrs Holland’s tenure these past five years.

"I am sure you will all join me in extending a very warm welcome to Mr Smikle when he joins us next term.

"Similarly, I want to wish Mrs Holland every happiness and success for the future. She has been a wonderful Director of Legat and brought excellence and happiness to all those who study and have studied dance at Bede’s."
