Bede’s Appoints New Bursar

The Board of Governors have appointed Dr J R Northway MB FRCS to the post of Bursar within the Trust with a provisional start date of 22 August 2016.

This is the first time the Trust will have employed a traditional Bursar with full powers.

Dr Northway will bring diverse management, administrative and financial skills to Bede’s, having worked as Bursar for more than 8 years in one of the leading schools in East Africa before moving to his current post of Bursar and Clerk to the Board of Governors at Pennthorpe, a co-educational prep school in West Sussex.

Dr Northway’s journey to becoming a Bursar began after he spent 10 years as a medical mission partner at Berega Hospital in Tanzania, having previously graduated from Southampton School of Medicine and completed his surgical training in Oxfordshire.

During his time working with the Anglican Church in a remote, rural hospital, Dr Northway became Medical Officer in Charge and led the hospital management team. He then became more actively involved in the running of the hospital store and the training of local Tanzanian staff to take on management roles, which ultimately enabled him to leave behind a financially viable hospital.

In 2007, Dr Northway then took up the post as Bursar of St Andrew’s School Turi, a British curriculum, international, full boarding school set in 340 acres in the Kenyan Highlands where he was involved in designing and establishing a sixth form college which offered A Levels to over 100 students.

Having lived in East Africa for nearly 20 years, Dr Northway and his wife Mary, who is also a doctor, then returned to the UK with their son Sam to enable Dr Northway to take up his current post.

Since joining Pennthorpe, he has applied the principles of sound financial management that he learned in East Africa whilst ensuring compliance with Health and Safety, Safeguarding and other UK regulations.

Dr Northway (who likes to be known as Noj) will report to the Senior Headmaster/CEO and will have direct access to the Board of Governors.
