Cricket versus Marylebone Cricket Club

Bede’s played hosts to the MCC again this year on Monday 2 May and, despite the dreadful weather conditions, some top quality cricket was played.

The MCC won the toss and elected to bat, with the game being reduced to 40 overs per side due to the weather.

With cloudy overhead conditions and the ball seaming around the MCC lost a couple of early wickets however their team had real strength and depth in its batting line-up and featured many experienced league cricketers.

The MCC eventually ended up on 246 for 7 off of their allotted 40 overs, with Wilson scoring 91 and former Bede’s student Toby Glover scoring 37.

The pick of the Bede’s bowlers were Dikembe Wilson 3 for 56 and Delray Rawlins bowling his 8 overs for a miserly 17 runs.

In reply, Bede’s lost Hoadley in the 4th over but then a superb partnership of 101 between Sussex academy cricketers Joe Billings and Delray Rawlins put Bede’s back on track.

Alas, Delray was caught for 63 when looking set for a century and Dikembe quickly followed.

Another minor recovery between Joe Billings, who scored a well-paced 69, and Tom Gordon, who scored 18, led to a partnership of 46.

As is often the case though, when one wicket falls there is quite often a collapse and Bede’s went on to loss 4 wickets for just 2 runs before rain eventually had the match cancelled for a draw, with Bede’s finishing on 173 for 7 with 9 overs to go.
