Cricket: U15s Win Blackshaw Cup
Bede’s U15 Cricket team won the first cup of the cricket season on Tuesday, defeating Ardingly College in the final of the Sussex Independent Schools Blackshaw Cup.
Bede's, whose side featured seven U14 players, won the toss and batted. Tom Gordon and Alastair Orr got Bede's off to a flying start in much the same way they had in their undefeated, 211 run partnership in the semi-final against Brighton College – although on this occasion young master Orr was playing with a broken rib!
The duo put on 134 for the first wicket in 14 overs. Alastair Orr was first out for a very brave and skilful 54 and Tom Gordon followed a couple of overs later for a very well compiled 83, mixing controlled aggression and dexterous placing.
Ardingly then came to the crease but were never really at the races; a very tight opening spell of adroit off-spin from Scott Lenham saw him take 3 for 12 off his 4 overs. Felix Sheppard then demonstrated how his left arm orthodox bowling has developed this year, taking 3 for 13.
Additional wickets fell care of James Sampson, Oscar Green and Ben Matthew, and this superb sequence of bowling was incredibly well backed-up by some outstanding fielding which included 2 great catches from Ben Matthew.
A brilliant all-round team performance saw Bede's emerging the winners by 106 having bowled Ardingly out for just 70.
Mr Lenham, Mr Wells and Mr Kirtley.
The team have played some brilliant cricket this year under the guidance of Neil Lenham and thoroughly deserved their win.
I am convinced that this team will go from strength to strength and develop into one of the best teams Bede's has ever had – provided, of course, that they continue to work as hard as they have this year and enjoy their cricket just as much.
