Tennis: Bede’s Wins Sussex LTA Award for Education

Bede’s scooped an award in the Education category at the annual Sussex LTA Awards ceremony last week.

Receiving the award, Bede’s Director of Tennis, Julie Salmon thanked Bede’s staff and pupils, the Sussex LTA and its sponsors, commenting “I’m so pleased to receive this award which reflects the value we place as a school on participation in tennis from beginner level right through to the elite academy programme.”

At the awards event held at the Amex in Brighton, Ms Salmon spoke also about the importance of Bede’s Emerging Talent Programme, explaining how this unique scheme has supported elite players across a range of sports, including tennis, with physical and psychological profiling, advice on nutrition and even media training.

Elise van Heuvelen, who herself was part of the programme, and is now studying at Iowa University on a tennis scholarship, also received the Pat MacNamara award for Girls’ Sportsmanship and sent a video message from the US in which she said “Although I’m having a great time out here, I’m really missing everyone at Bede’s and my coaching sessions with Jules.”

Julie Goldin from the Sussex LTA commented, “Tennis Sussex are so pleased that Bede's School won the Education Award as they provide top players the chance to play tennis to a high level as well as achieving top grades in their exams.

"The school also offers tennis to any student wanting to play, no matter what level of ability, making them a great winner of the award."
