Hockey: Bede's 1sts Win Sussex Championship

U19 Sussex Hockey Champions

Bede’s 1st team hockey players took part in the Sussex 6’s competition held in Eastbourne on Wednesday 8 March and took home the Sussex 6’s U19 championship.

The team faced stiff competition at the group stage, facing and winning against Seaford College 4-2, Eastbourne College 3-2 and Angemering 4-0.

The next stage was the semi-final against Lancing College where the Bede’s team worked superbly together to secure at 2-0 win and progress to the final against Eastbourne College.

The first half saw opportunities for both sides, with the score nil-nil at halftime.

Despite conceding an early goal in the second half, the Bede’s squad rallied together and with expert play from both Harry Wootten and Tom Gordon saw the game end level on 1-1, taking the match to penalty shootouts.

Bede’s went into the shoot-out confidently with Sam Leonard in goal putting pressure on the Eastbourne takers, saving one of the three and forcing the other two to shoot wide of the goal.

Harry Wootten then held his nerve for Bede’s scoring his penalty, which turned out to be decisive, which ensured that Bede’s emerged from the contest as Sussex champions.

Well done to all of the boys who worked so hard across the course of the day.

Furthermore, considering how many of you are in the Lower Sixth or below, I have very high hopes for next year's 1st XI season!
