Cricket: Bede's Boys Tour South Africa

A 16-strong squad of Bede’s cricketers recently flew to sunny South Africa to take part in a 10-day tour of Cape Town and the surrounding area.

In-between training and playing matches at a series of prestigious schools and cricket clubs, the boys visited Table Mountain, Hout Bay, Camp Bay, Robben Island and Chapman’s Peak.

Aged 14-17, the squad revelled in the array of culinary options on offer and leapt at the opportunity to practise their cricket at Langa CC, Green Point Stadium, Gary Kirsten Academy and Paul Roos Gymnasium in Stellenbosch.

It was the group’s tour a local township that made a deepest impression however, as 1st XI cricketer Alastair Orr explained.

“Visiting the township near Langa, where a number of local children came to watch us play, was humbling, and touring around the area really opened our eyes to how lucky we are,” he said.

The cohort’s visit to Robben Island was similarly impactful, as fellow 1st team player Tom Peck detailed.

“The island held many influential and history-changing political prisoners,” Tom said, “and we toured the massive prison there and visited Nelson Mandela’s cell, which was a fascinating experience.”

With the weeklong stay in Cape Town organised as a Pre-Season Training Camp, Bede’s Director of Cricket Mr Wells was happy to see some strong individual performances from many of the players, with Scott Lenham, Henry Crocombe and Tommy Forder marking themselves out for special recognition.

The boys nonetheless initially struggled to adjust to the heat, losing their first four matches against Newlands High School, Paul Roos Gymnasium and two 20-20 fixtures.

Thankfully, the group were victorious against Langa High School and Gary Kirsten Academy in their final two contests, thanks in no small part due to some intelligent captaincy from Zac Cisotti.

“We left South Africa and its spectacular sights, sounds, tastes and smells, having demonstrated a good bit of form and had an unforgettable time,” Tom concluded.

“As a result, we are all very thankful to Mr Wells for organising such a brilliant and wide-ranging tour. It really was a once-in-a-lifetime experience.”
