Tennis: Bede’s Teams Enjoy Ace Season So Far

Bede’s Senior School’s tennis team have made a very strong start to the summer season with the Under 18 boys and Under 16 boys and girls both unbeaten in all matches played in the Sussex Independent Schools League, including against schools such as Eastbourne College, Brighton College, Lancing College, Hurst, Worth, Ardingly and Christ’s Hospital.

Between them, the two teams have dropped just three sets out of the 72 played and have won the Boys’ and Girls’ Sussex Schools Shield which includes all schools throughout Sussex.

The younger players have also made a good start with the Under 15 Boys and Girls also remaining unbeaten in the Aegon Sussex League.

These various Bede’s teams are also making excellent progress at a National level where the U18 boys are now through to the semi-finals of the Glanville Cup qualifying stage, during which the Bede’s A team will play Bede’s B team.  The winning team of that match will then meet Sevenoaks in the final round of qualifying, with the winner of that match going through to compete in the National Schools Cup finals.

The U18 girls are also through to the final of the Aberdare Cup qualifying stage after beaten Lancing College, and are just one match away from qualifying for the National Schools Cup finals in Nottingham during July.

Commenting on the teams’ performances, Bede’s Director of Tennis, Julie Salmon said, “We have known for some time that we have a really special group of players at Bede’s but what is also so pleasing to see is that the new younger players who have joined the squad are also making their mark.

“We have got some tough matches to come – particularly in qualifying for the Nationals – but I know all the players will bring their best to every match and everyone in the team really relishes the challenge.”
