Athletics: Bede's Pupils Excel at Sussex Schools Athletics Championships
Pupils from Years 9 to 13 represented Bede’s at the Sussex School Athletics Association Track and Field Championships on Saturday 10 June at K2 Athletics Track, Crawley following a roaring success at the area trials.
On Saturday 10 June, 15 athletes from Bede’s were blessed with glorious sunshine as they competed in the Track and Field Championships.
Junior boys and girls from Year 9 put in excellent performances at the K2. Elise Sutherland, who was successful at the area trials in shot putt, went on to finish in 2nd place in the Championships with a throw of 10m. She has further qualified for the Inter-Counties Schools Track and Field Championships, Basingstoke on 17 June.
Themba Wardle faced a fast 800m and Phoebe Dixon finished 5th in the junior girls long jump with a distance of 4.43m. Lara Elder, selected for the javelin, took a wise decision to get a throw on the board after two no-throws. She achieved a distance of 15.60m, but against strong competitors this was tough.
Our intermediate athletes Kristen Chan and Mayo Braithwaite, both track athletes, competed in the 100m and 200m respectively. Kristen finished 6th in the intermediate girls 100m heats and Mayo Braithwaite finished 4th in the intermediate boys 200m heats second race; both were challenged by some very fast athletes.
Our senior athletes performed brilliantly on Saturday. Katinka Morris qualified in the 100m hurdles for the senior girls, finishing in 2nd place. Toby Wiltshire qualified in the 110m hurdles for the senior boys, with a time of 16.90s, also finishing in 2nd place.
Marcus Hendry, finished 4th in the senior boys 200m heats second race with a time of 24.35s and went through to the final, but opted not to run based on the qualifying times of the other athletes racing. Marcus also qualified for the 100m final and finished 6th against some tough opposition.
Maisie Cox finished 4th in the 100m senior girls final with a time of 14.26s, while Rebecca Smart finished 2nd in the 800m senior girls final with a time of 2 minutes 36s.
The standard was very high at the Sussex Schools Championships and all the pupils performed brilliantly, they certainly made Bede’s proud. We wish all the athletes the best of luck for future competitions at the Inter-Counties Schools Track and Field Championships, and hope to see qualification entry times and distances achieved for the English Schools Athletics Competition in Birmingham on 7 July.
A huge thank you to Mr Sealey and Mr Carter for giving their time to attend training and fixtures with the pupils, and to all the parents who tirelessly support their children at the long days of athletics fixtures.
We all look forward to the cross country season in September and hope to continue strengthening our athletics squads ready for the 2018 season.
