Football: Bede's Madrid Tour 2017
On 25 August a touring party of twenty footballers headed for sunny Madrid.
On arrival we headed straight to our first training session of the season where teamwork and fitness were the main themes.
The following day we headed to the outstanding Real Madrid training complex to train with one of their world-class coaches. This was followed by an amazing stadium tour of the 85,000 seater stadium, the Santiago Bernabéu.
That evening saw our first game of the tour against a strong EF Moratalaz academy side. The game was fast paced end to end, with Bede’s being the eventual winners thanks to goals from Isaac Drogba and Captain Matt Pickering.
Everyone felt slightly sore after the first game of the season, so spent the following day having a light training session before going to watch Real Madrid vs Valencia.
The atmosphere in the stadium was unbelievable and the rising star of Real Madrid, Marcos Asensio, scored two stunning goals. This was certainly a major highlight of the whole trip!
Our second match of the tour was against Juventud Sanse, an Atlético Madrid partner club. Bede’s dominated the game from start to finish winning 3-1, with goals from Isaac Drogba, Tommy Trenaman and Matt Pickering.
With two impressive wins under our belt, we headed to the Atlético Madrid training complex. Although the facilities were not quite as sophisticated as the Real Madrid complex, the level of coaching was second-to-none.
Following the session, we all agreed that the Atlético experience topped the Real Madrid visit and everyone loved their new Atlético Madrid scarves that had been gifted to us.
What was particularly pleasing was the themes we had worked on during our own training sessions were replicated so brilliantly by the coaches at Atlético.
Spirits were high on our penultimate day and the evening brought the final match of our tour. Bede’s came up against a very strong fourth division professional academy who seemed much fitter, stronger and quicker than our previous opponents.
The first 20 minutes of the match was near perfection and the progress in our patterns of play had increased dramatically through the week. However, five training sessions and three matches in six days eventually took its toll and Bede’s were unlucky to lose 3-2, with goals from Isaac Drogba and Victor Trauer.
The final day of the tour was filled with a fun-filled round of Footgolf, which to everyone’s surprise was won by Mr Crocker!
Mr Caryer was extremely pleased with the behaviour of the players and their attitude in training and matches. He comments that, “The six days together not only allowed us to make a lot of progress in our play, but also enabled us to develop that team spirit and friendships which are key for the season. Another brilliant football tour has come to an end!”
