First Years Head To Peak District For A Week Of Outdoor Pursuits
What a week it has been! It's that time of year again when the whole of Bede's First Years, a total of 138 pupils along with 12 brave members of staff, travelled to the YHA Activity Centre in Edale.
Situated in the stunning Peak District, we spent a week embracing the outdoors on our annual Outdoor Pursuit's Trip.
For some pupils, this was their first time away from home without family, but it was wonderful to see how quickly they settled down, made new friends and shared their excitement for the week ahead. The first challenge the pupils had to overcome on arrival was making their own bed! Despite a six hour journey, we were thrown straight into activities on Monday evening.
Each member of the Bede's staff are allocated a group of 12 pupils. Having only joined the Senior School a mere six weeks ago, this gave the First Years the opportunity to bond with other members of their year group and work as a team.
The First Year pupils spent nearly a week participating in a huge range of activities running from 9am to 9pm including caving, high ropes and weaseling.
Each morning saw every pupil going for a morning run down the hill to collect a breakfast token. Daily activities ranged from abseiling off an 80ft viaduct near Buxton to canoeing on Combs reservoir.
The pupils immersion in the natural environment has improved their ability to work in a team, a skill particularly evident in orienteering when map reading in groups, and in bushcraft where pupils had the challenge of building their own fires in order to boil water, make hot chocolate and toast marshmallows.
Every evening after dinner we had our third and final activity of the day, with every group having the opportunity to go for two night hikes. Groups rotated through all the activities, with some going abseiling off a viaduct or caving in a disused mine in the dark!
The Outdoor Pursuits trip has brought new challenges, experiences and friendships for all the pupils; it is definitely a week they will remember for years to come. Well done to all our First Year pupils for trying things they have never done before, learning to work as a team and most importantly having a lot of fun.
