First Years Reach New Heights on Outdoor Pursuits Trip

Our First Years did us proud on their Outdoor Pursuits trip to the Peak District last week, as Mr Hicks reports.

Every year in October, our First Year pupils set off for a week of outdoor pursuits at the YHA Activity Centre in the beautiful village of Edale, Peak District. The trip is an amazing opportunity for the whole year group to come together and have fun at the end of a busy (and for some, a fairly daunting) first Half Term.

After being assigned into groups of 12, the pupils set off on a number of activities accompanied by a (brave) member of the Bede's staff and a professional instructor. Activities range from abseiling from Miller’s Dale Bridge (a disused viaduct) to orienteering on the hills, canoeing on the Combs River and weaselling at world-renowned climbing area, Stanage Edge. Pupils also learned fire lighting and bush craft, and enjoyed caving and night hiking around the Hope Valley.

The pupils’ determination and competitiveness certainly shined throughout the week as they had the opportunity to try things that many had never experienced before.

The weather was truly on our side, and we had some lovely bright sunny days. Each day started with a hearty breakfast to set us all up for the first activity. It was then back for lunch before setting off again for the afternoon activities and before we knew it, it was dinnertime followed by the last activity of the day. Each group undertook two night hikes during the week, where we enjoyed beautiful starlit evenings with a bright moon, which enabled us to see the silhouettes of the mountains around us as we walked.

So, as we set off on the coach and leave the Hope Valley, and as the 60-odd mobile phones behind me start beeping again as they pick up the 4G for the first time since we arrived, I look back on another wonderful and successful Outdoor Pursuits Trip. I hope the trip has given our new First Year’s some wonderful memories and developed new and strong friendships. For the staff, it’s great to see the pupils having so much fun pushing themselves to climb a little higher, step a little wider and dig a little deeper.

It really has been a fantastic week!
