Hockey: Girls Pick Up The Pace on Portugal Tour
Over the Half Term, we took a Senior and Junior tour group to Porto for a five day mid-season Hockey Training Camp.
The 38 girls on the trip were fortunate enough to play against local Portuguese opposition in three competitive matches, as well as having the opportunity to be coached by Fernando Gomes, the Portugal U18 Boys National Team coach.
We had the luxury of using the Lousada Sports Complex which is the National Hockey Centre in Portugal, similar to Bisham Abbey here in the UK. The tour party was also lucky enough to visit Porto to do a sight-seeing tour of the city, as well as spending a day on the Porto Atlantic Beach.
The Junior group played versus Portuguese National Team players in their fixtures and fought admirably in all three matches. The Senior tour group’s highlight culminated in a thrilling draw against Viso Hockey Club Ladies 1xi who play in the National Portuguese Premier League. The squad had to work incredibly hard in the heat to earn a positive result against seasoned performance hockey players.
We extend our thanks to our hosts, the Portuguese Hockey Federation, as well as our accommodation staff who looked after us so well.
