Bede’s Girls Impress on the Sports Field
Freya Kemp (First Year), Izzy Atherton and Mimi Cisotti (both Lower Fifth) are celebrating fantastic successes in Cricket and Hockey.
Freya is celebrating becoming the first female pupil in Bede’s history to score a century and have her name appear on the School’s Cricket Honours Board. Freya scored an impressive 103 not out, including 13 fours and two sixes, during the recent match against Christ’s Hospital in the U14 Holdsworth Cup.
Freya says, “It was fantastic to score my first century – I had worked hard in training all winter, so it was great to see the hard work pay off. The Sports Department at Bede’s is brilliant; the coaches are very supportive and have a lot of professional experience that they can pass on to us. I would love to play cricket professionally when I leave school, and will keep working hard to keep improving.”
Alan Wells, Director of Cricket at Bede’s and former Sussex, Kent and England cricketer, says, “It is always exciting to see new talent coming through the cricket world, and Freya is definitely someone to watch out for. To have scored a century at such a young stage of her athletic career is a fantastic achievement, and I look forward to seeing her name on our Bede’s Honours Board.”
Freya has also just been selected to play for the England Women Academy cricket team at their match against Scotland on Friday 7 June - good luck Freya!
Izzy travelled to Lilleshall National Sports and Conferencing Centre in Telford on Saturday 18 May to take part in an England U15 Girls Experience Hockey Camp, which was at NAGS (national) level. Izzy says, “I really enjoyed the camp – particularly the fitness training. I hope to play for England one day, and this is a really exciting start. I first played Hockey in Year 6 when Mrs Lenham handed me a Hockey stick, and I have been hooked ever since. I would like to thank my coaches Mr Dowse, Mr Johnson and Mrs Lenham for everything – they have helped to build my confidence in goal and inspire me to stay motivated.”
Theo Dowse, Assistant Director of Hockey at Bede’s and former England U21 player, adds, “We are incredibly proud of the hard work that Izzy has put in over the past three years, and it is fantastic to see that her dedication to the sport is paying off. This is the beginning of a very exciting Hockey journey for Izzy, and I look forward to continuing to work with her and helping her to perform at her maximum potential. I am certain that we will see great things from Izzy in the future.”
Mimi was part of the Surrey U15 squad that won the U15 County Championship earlier this month. Theo Dowse comments, “Many congratulations to Mimi and her team for winning the County Championship this season – this is a truly fantastic achievement.
“Mimi is one of a number of pupils currently representing our school on the county and regional circuits. We are incredibly proud to have had pupils representing both Sussex and Surrey in the County Championship leagues, always making for an interesting battle when the sides play against each other, as well as those representing their Performance Centres in their Cluster competitions. The continual drive from our pupils to achieve success on the representational stage is a testament to all the individuals concerned with their attitudes towards continual self-improvement.”
Freya, Izzy and Mimi are also officially National Champions in Indoor Cricket following the Bede's team's outstanding performance at the Lady Taverner's National Finals at Lord's last month.
