Ella Bartram, First Year

I came to Bede’s from a school in Surrey, and the two are so different that I don’t know where to start.

It is my dream to play Hockey for England, and that dream came about almost by accident. At my old school, I didn’t feel motivated to work hard but I still managed to earn a place playing for the county. Since coming to Bede’s though, I have been able to reach a whole other level.

I have training with Bede’s Strength and Conditioning coach, who really knows how to get the best out of everyone, and Mr Johnson, the Director of Hockey, who is a truly great coach. He makes time in morning break, at lunch and every afternoon to hold extra training sessions, and the effects are plain to see. I have learned so many new skills and can really feel the difference.

Unfortunately, I’m not particularly academic but the teachers here are so passionate that it’s genuinely surprising. I’m getting great grades for the first time in my life, and I feel motivated almost in spite of myself. The confidence I feel in Hockey is starting to bleed into my academic life, and that is something I never expected.

Boarding here is also absolutely brilliant. I remember my first day and feeling awkward for a few moments, but I seemed to make friends straight away and now we’re really close. I actually feel like I’m at home.

If you don’t know what to expect from Bede’s, take it from me: this is the most friendly and supportive school you could ever imagine. I say that as a very competitive person, because Bede’s really is the best.
