Founded in 1895 as a small seaside preparatory school with just four boys, Bede’s School (managed by the St Bede's School Trust Sussex) has evolved into one of the premier co-educational, independent day and boarding schools in the United Kingdom. Bede’s Prep School & Nursery
The journey begins at Bede's Prep School, located on a spectacular cliff-top campus in the Meads area of Eastbourne, nestled right beside Beachy Head and overlooking the sea. The Prep School provides a nurturing, compassionate environment and includes a Nursery which takes babies from three months old within the Holywell building.
Its idyllic coastal location allows the school to weave nature directly into the curriculum through beach and forest school activities, while offering top-tier facilities including beachfront classrooms and an indoor swimming pool.
Bede's Upper School
In 2026 Bede's announced that it would be opening a new Upper School on its Eastbourne campus from September 2027. The Upper School will educate pupils from Year 7 through to Year 11 and will operate as day school offering a streamlined, high impact academic educational experience.
Bede’s Senior School & Sixth Form
Bede's Senior School opened the doors of its Upper Dicker campus in 1979 and is set across 120 acres of rolling countryside, around 20 minutes from the Prep School.
The Senior School has recently announced that it will extend its provision to include children from Year 7, from September 2027 onwards, through to Year 13.
The Upper Dicker campus boasts extraordinary amenities that reflect its varied curriculum, including a extensive sports facilities, the prestigious Legat School of Dance, and even its own fully accredited, on-site zoo housing over 70 species. The Senior School is also home to over 300 boarders who live in five modern, purpose-built boarding houses.
Burgess Hill Girls
In June 2026, Burgess Hill Girls joined the St Bede’s School Trust (Bede's Trust)
The merger brings together two leading Sussex independent schools with shared values and a commitment to providing an excellent, rounded education. Burgess Hill Girls continues to operate as a distinct all-girls school on its current site, retaining its name, uniform, traditions and ethos.
Unprecedented Choice
The extension of provision to include a day school through to Year 11 in Eastbourne and the building of a new centre for pupils in Years 7 and 8 at the Senior School campus in Upper Dicker, heralds an era of unprecedented choice for parents. Whilst the Upper School in Eastbourne will be offer a more boutique, streamlined offer at a more accessible price point, the Senior School at Upper Dicker will continue to offer a broad academic and co-curriculum as well as as extensive facilities for both day students and boarders alike.
The Bede's Ethos
What truly sets Bede’s apart is its rejection of rigid, purely academic "top-slicing" in favor of inclusive excellence. The school operates on the firm belief that happy children are successful children. Rather than forcing pupils into a singular mold, the faculty champions student choice and bespoke pathways, encouraging individuals to pursue everything from traditional A-Levels and BTECs to elite sports and animal management. Pupils at Bede’s School in Sussex are celebrating today after delivering another record-breaking performance, securing the school’s best-ever GCSE results. Just under half (47%) of all grades awarded were at the highest 9–7 level (or equivalent).

Pupils at Bede’s School are celebrating a historic academic milestone today, having achieved the finest A Level and BTEC results in the Sussex school’s history. An impressive 84% of all grades were awarded at A* to B, with a third of all grades (33%) achieved at the top A* level (or equivalent).
