Our Vision: To get the best out of every individual we work with through unrivalled contact time and provide every player with a future football pathway once they leave Bede’s.
We have a total of 14 teams and around a third of the School regularly representing the School and all players receiving at least two training sessions per week plus fixtures on Saturdays. We have an extensive fixtures list, playing some of the strongest football schools in the country such as Bradfield, Eton, Millfield and many more. Unusually for an independent school, Bede’s Football Programme also runs throughout the year, rather than just during the winter months.
In 2018, Bede’s became a member of the HUDL league at Senior 1st XI level, which consists of the strongest independent footballing schools across the country. We were delighted to be announced HUDL League Champions in May 2020 and EFSA U18 National Champions in May 2022; this is a fantastic achievement, and testament to our players' hard work and dedication to the sport.
The Junior A teams play in the Elgin Southern League with the U15s being current Champions in the 2021/22 season.
Each year, Bede’s Football department tours to top European academies. In the last four years, we have visited AFC Ajax in Amsterdam, Real Madrid and Athletico Madrid and SL Benfica, Lisbon.
Pictured is the Bede's pre-season tour to Porto in September 2022.
Coaching is led by our Director of Football, David Caryer, UEFA A pre and Sussex coach. He is supported by former professional footballer, Dan Harding (Brighton and Hove Albion, Southampton and Ipswich Town); and Director of Swerve Football Academy, Oliver Davies.
The main aim for Bede’s football is that pupils continue playing the beautiful game after they leave the School, whether recreationally or professionally as outlined in the following pathways:

With an additional 3 hours of training given in small groups to First Year Academy players every fortnight, including work with Bede’s Director of Football and our specialist Strength and Conditioning Coach, our Junior Academy offers the very highest standard of personalised training.
At U14 level we typically field three sides, developing pathways through ISFA, County or professional clubs for our elite players whilst also ensuring there is a broad focus on participation for our recreational players. Our U14s will have 6 hours training per week plus strength and conditioning and fixtures leading to a total of 10 hours play per week.

The 1st XI programme aims to give players excellent exit routes and pathways after they leave Bede’s. The programme is a year-round programme with pre-season training, 35 to 40 matches per season, and fixtures against local academies and clubs such as Brighton and Hove Albion.
Our Girls Football programme has a three-term offering, giving pupils access to high-quality training that is available all year round.
We will also be launching our brand new Girls Football Academy in September 2023! For more information, please contact David Caryer - david.caryer@bedes.org.
Our Girls Football programme is open to everyone - girls have the opportunity to train up to three times per week throughout the year and additional hours of small group coaching if selected for the Girls Football Academy. The girls enter all national competitions - ESFA and ISFA as well as local County Cups. Matches are filmed with VEO camera technology and analysed using HUDL software.
Girls in the Football Academy have access to regular fitness testing, individual development plans, and strength and conditioning programmes. Coaching is led by UEFA B and FA Youth Advanced coaches.
There are additional opportunities with the school's partnership with Lewes Ladies FC (FA WSL 2) such as masterclasses, scouting opportunities and training from their coaches. Pupils are also able to watch WSL and WSL 2 fixtures.
Past achievements have included winning the ISFA cup in 2018, and the ISFA 7s on numerous occasions. Individual achievements include Leilanni Nesbeth playing for Brighton and Hove Albion and Eloise Eyre for Lewes Ladies FC. As well as numerous pupils receiving football scholarships for the USA.
Football Scholars become members of our SDP (Scholars Development Programme). This gives them access to the academies, masterclasses with professional players (as photographed below), strength and conditioning programmes, and regular testing throughout the season.
Our visiting masterclass coaches in 2021/22 included James Norwood, Adam El-Abd and Solly March.
