Maths

The Maths department at Bede’s is thriving with more pupils than ever choosing to take Maths at Sixth Form level.

Two thirds of the A level course is devoted to Pure Mathematics covering topics including Calculus, Algebra and Trigonometry.  During the remaining third of the course, pupils study Statistics and Mechanics using real life examples to bring the topics to life including the existence of leukaemia clusters in Statistics and a free-fall parachute simulation in Mechanics.

Further Maths is also offered as a subject which can be studied alongside A Level Maths. The course is designed for those who have both a love of the subject and an innate ability. Further Mathematics is a demanding but satisfying course and is recommended for those aspiring to a career in engineering or science or anyone wanting to study Maths at university or considering studying a STEM subject at Oxbridge. Pupils studying Further Maths will be fortunate enough to spend half their time studying maths.

Pupils are encouraged to pursue their own mathematical interests within and outside the curriculum, supported by our enrichment programme which includes one to one coaching for Oxbridge or university interviews, trips to MathsFest and participation in the UKMT Individual Challenge.
