We are excited to announce that Lower Sixth Bede’s pupil and seasoned flautist Daisy Noton is competing in the Woodwind Category Final of the coveted BBC Young Musician of the Year 2020.
Daisy is one of only five woodwind musicians to have reached the finals out of the hundreds who entered the competition. The Category Finals will be broadcast weekly on Sunday evenings throughout May on BBC Four, with the Woodwind Category Final being shown on Sunday 10 May at 7pm. We encourage all music lovers in the Bede’s community to tune into the original broadcast or BBC iPlayer for what will undoubtedly be a fantastic evening of performances.

The five winners of each category – Woodwind, Brass, Piano, String and Percussion – will compete in the semi-finals, after which the final three musicians will compete in the Grand Final for the title of Young Musician of the Year 2020. Dates have understandably been postponed, but it is hoped that the broadcasts will take place in the autumn.
Alongside Bede’s, Daisy studies with Susan Torke at the Junior Royal Academy of Music. She is a member of the National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain and also plays with her local orchestras. Daisy has played concertos with the Hastings Sinfonia, Sussex Concert Orchestra, EYSM and most recently with the London Mozart Players, and in November last year played to a sold-out audience at Homelink’s 20th Anniversary Gala at Glyndebourne.
Commenting on the BBC Young Musician of the Year competition, Daisy says, “I am so excited to have reached this stage of BBC Young Musician 2020. I genuinely didn’t think that I would get this far, and to be performing alongside such talented musicians at this stage of the competition is just fantastic.”
Mr Robert Scamardella, Director of Music at Bede’s, comments, “We are incredibly excited for Daisy, who at only 16 years old has already achieved amazing things in her music career. She plays the flute with flair and grace, and is committed to constantly improving and challenging herself. She is a joy to teach, and I know that she is destined for great things now and in the future. Many congratulations, and I very much look forward to seeing her performance on the BBC very soon.”
Well done Daisy!
