Read Upper Sixth pupil Tam's account of the recent A-Level Biology trip:
Recently, 16 A-Level Biologists departed for our annual field trip to the FSC at Nettlecombe Court, Exmoor. Under bright, sunny skies, we immersed ourselves in the Exmoor National Park ecosystem, mastering ecological sampling techniques across local rivers, streams, and the Watchet coastline. This trip allowed pupils to bridge the gap between classroom theory and real-world application. Beyond the academics, the experience fostered independence through communal living and sustainable practices. As the saying goes in the Bede’s Biology department: "We take A-Level pupils to Nettlecombe, but we bring back Biologists."
I gained a realistic understanding of what it means to be a true biologist from the A level Biology field trip at Nettlecombe Court. We participated in a range of relevant activities on this trip, such as investigating biodiversity in various settings like rocky coastlines and the moors of Exmoor. From estimating yarrow abundance at various altitudes to learning about aquatic species like freshwater shrimp, every day offered us new experiences. Each of us had the chance to carry out independent study and carry out a biological experiment according to our interests, which enhanced my independent skills, as well as enabling me to evaluate and reach logical conclusions. This field trip served as a bonding experience in addition to an academic enriching one, and each of us have developed shared memories.
