Bede’s Hockey teams have had an outstanding term filled with many successes. The U18 boys and girls Hockey teams at Bede’s Senior School are celebrating fantastic wins and have earned the title - Sussex Champions! In November, both the girls and the boys embarked on the Indoor Hockey Sussex Championships. Both teams already qualified from the County rounds into the Regional phases of the National competition. It was just a question of who would become Sussex champions!
The U18 girls finished in third place in the South region after having their competition on Sunday 20 November. After a fantastic game against Hurst, the girls won 4-0. Standout performances were from Ryana Macdonald-Gay and Amelia Tait who performed excellently and Isabel Field who was outstanding in goal.
When it came to the U18 Outdoor Girls Sussex Championships, the girls were victorious! This is a fantastic achievement. The 1xi squad performed brilliantly throughout their county league campaign. No fewer than 18 players have represented the team in the league, scoring a total of 16 goals and conceding just 4, displaying a real show of dominance within the county. It is also a pleasure to note that pupils have represented the side across multiple year groups, displaying a real show of sustainability for squad depth in years to come. This becomes an even greater achievement, to now become double Sussex champions, following the side’s successes in their indoor hockey campaign.
Now at the mid-point in our season, the girls have a very exciting national league campaign, currently with a 100% win record versus some of the top schools in the country, as well as knockout cup quarter finals to follow. The benefit of having a full two-term programme enables the girls to continue developing their individual capabilities as we also head towards international representation, with four members of the squad now selected within their respective national teams.
Bede’s U18 boys’ squad had an extremely successful indoor hockey campaign, being crowned Sussex champions in a tense final. A number of key players within the squad contributed brilliantly to the side, including Kent Sheard scoring 4 goals in the final. This was the first taste of indoor hockey competition for multiple members within the side, so to come out victorious is a great achievement.
Theo Dowse, Director of Hockey, comments, “Both our girls & boys U18 squads continue to impress with our indoor and outdoor programmes, translating to success in tournament play. The capacity to play both indoor and outdoor formats gives a well-rounded hockey tuition and enables the pupils to access all forms of our sport. The pupils performed excellently in their county and regional rounds and should be extremely pleased with themselves. We are very proud of the work that the boys and girls have put in and look forward to the remainder of season in January”.
