Welcome to Mathematics at Bede’s Prep!

At Bede’s Prep, we aim to develop confident, capable mathematicians who enjoy exploring mathematical ideas and applying their skills to solve problems. Using the White Rose Maths scheme, we follow a mastery approach that emphasises deep understanding, mathematical fluency and reasoning, ensuring that pupils build secure foundations and can apply their learning in a range of contexts.

Our curriculum is designed to encourage curiosity, resilience and confidence, preparing pupils thoroughly for the challenges of senior school and beyond.

Year 7: Building Strong Mathematical Foundations

Year 7 is an exciting stage in your mathematical journey. You will build on the skills you already have and apply them to new topics and challenges. Students develop confidence with fractions, decimals and percentages, while being introduced to algebra through simplifying expressions and solving linear equations.

In geometry, you will explore transformations such as reflections, rotations and translations, as well as deepen your understanding of angles and shape properties. Lessons encourage curiosity, logical thinking and problem-solving, with plenty of opportunities to explain your reasoning, ask questions and work collaboratively with others.

Year 8: Taking Mathematics Further

Year 8 builds on the knowledge and skills developed in Year 7, introducing students to more challenging mathematical concepts and problem-solving opportunities. Topics include solving simultaneous equations, working with statistics and probability, and developing algebraic reasoning.

Students will also explore the properties of right-angled triangles through Pythagoras’ theorem and trigonometry, while applying their understanding of volume and surface area to a range of practical and real-world contexts. Throughout the year, lessons focus on developing confidence, accuracy and mathematical thinking, helping students prepare for the transition to secondary-level study.

Advanced Algebra Programme

Students in the top set have the opportunity to follow an enhanced algebra programme across Years 7 and 8. Alongside the standard curriculum, they work towards the Edexcel Level 2 Algebra Award, which is taken in May of Year 8.

This nationally recognised qualification provides additional challenge for mathematically able students, helping them develop a deeper understanding of algebra and strengthening the skills needed for future GCSE study. The course encourages confidence, fluency and problem-solving, giving students a strong foundation for further mathematical success.

Welcome to English at Bede's Prep!

At Bede’s Prep, we aim to foster a lifelong appreciation of language and literature while helping pupils develop confidence in reading, writing and communication. Through the study of a wide range of texts, pupils are encouraged to think critically, express their ideas clearly and explore different perspectives.

Our specialist teachers create engaging lessons that promote discussion, close reading and creative thinking. Pupils are supported in developing their analytical skills, broadening their vocabulary and finding their own voice as readers and writers.

Year 7: Exploring Literature and Developing Independence

The autumn term begins with the study of First World War poetry, where pupils explore language techniques, analyse different perspectives and consider the influence of propaganda. This is followed by a unit on Victorian Gothic literature, including the study of Charles Dickens’s memorable characters and the conventions of the Gothic genre. Pupils then draw on these ideas to create their own original characters and writing.

Alongside their English studies, pupils complete an iPQ (Independent Project Qualification). This provides an opportunity to investigate a topic of personal interest, develop independent research skills and present their findings in a format of their choice, such as a presentation, film or piece of artwork.

During the spring term, pupils study a contemporary novel, exploring themes, characters and viewpoints while further developing their analytical and essay-writing skills.

In the summer term, pupils are introduced to Homer’s The Odyssey. They examine different interpretations of this classic text, compare traditional and modern versions, and produce a range of creative and analytical responses inspired by the story.

Year 8: Shakespeare, Speaking and Modern Literature

Year 8 focuses on developing the skills, confidence and independence needed for the transition to senior school. Pupils study a range of Shakespeare’s comedies and tragedies, exploring character, theme and dramatic technique through discussion, performance and written analysis. They also have opportunities to bring scenes to life and consider how Shakespeare’s works can be adapted for modern audiences.

Later in the year, pupils revisit the Gothic genre, examining its key features before producing their own suspenseful and atmospheric creative writing.

During the spring term, pupils develop their speaking and presentation skills by researching, writing and delivering a short talk to an audience. They also study a selection of nature poetry, considering how writers use language and structure to convey ideas and emotions.

In the summer term, pupils explore themes of justice, courage and freedom through the novel The Bone Sparrow. Through discussion, analytical writing and creative responses, they develop a deeper understanding of the text and its wider social and cultural contexts.

Throughout the year, pupils benefit from a wide range of enrichment opportunities, including theatre visits, author events and creative writing activities, helping to foster a lasting appreciation of English and literature.

Science

Welcome to Science at Bede’s Prep!

Pupils benefit from teaching in three well-equipped laboratories, where practical investigation and scientific enquiry are at the heart of learning. Guided by specialist science teachers and supported by a dedicated laboratory technician, pupils develop their knowledge and skills through a broad and engaging curriculum based on the Oxford Smart Activate programme.

Our unique location between the South Downs National Park and the Sussex coastline provides valuable opportunities for learning beyond the classroom. Through fieldwork and environmental studies, pupils can explore scientific concepts in real-world settings and gain a deeper understanding of the natural world.

Year 7: Exploring Biology, Chemistry and Physics

Year 7 provides pupils with a broad introduction to the sciences, encouraging curiosity and practical investigation. In biology, pupils develop their microscopy skills by preparing and examining specimens, learning about cells and microorganisms through first-hand observation.

In chemistry, pupils explore the structure of the periodic table and develop essential laboratory skills through a range of practical experiments, including the preparation and mixing of solutions.

In physics, pupils investigate the properties of light, using equipment such as ray boxes and prisms to explore reflection, refraction and colour. Practical and creative activities throughout the year help pupils apply their scientific understanding and develop confidence in experimental work.

Year 8: Investigating Science Through Practical Discovery

Year 8 offers a wide range of opportunities for pupils to develop their scientific knowledge through practical investigation and experimentation. In chemistry, pupils use techniques such as chromatography to separate mixtures and analyse substances, explore the reactions of Group 1 metals, and investigate the properties of gases through a series of laboratory experiments.

In physics, pupils apply their understanding of electricity and magnetism by designing and testing electromagnets before using engineering and problem-solving skills to construct and evaluate wind-powered vehicles.

Throughout the year, pupils also have opportunities to engage with science beyond the classroom through talks, demonstrations and visits from professionals working in scientific and related fields, helping them to appreciate the real-world applications of the subjects they study.

Science Enrichment Opportunities

During the summer term, pupils extend their learning beyond the classroom through fieldwork and ecological studies in the local environment, including the South Downs and nearby coastal habitats. These experiences allow them to investigate ecosystems, collect and analyse data, design fair tests and develop their understanding of scientific enquiry.

Science learning is further enriched through a wide range of co-curricular activities and events.
