Discover Programme
The Discover Programme is a distinctive part of the curriculum for all pupils in Years 7 and 8. Designed to encourage curiosity, independence and reflection, it provides opportunities to explore a wide range of topics, ideas and skills beyond traditional subject boundaries.
Through the programme, pupils develop a deeper understanding of themselves as learners while also engaging with important themes and issues from the wider world. By encouraging critical thinking, creativity and collaboration, the Discover Programme helps pupils build confidence, broaden their perspectives and develop skills that will support them throughout their education and beyond.
What Makes the Discover Programme Different?
The Discover Programme encourages pupils to make connections across different areas of learning while developing the skills needed to succeed both in and beyond the classroom. Rather than focusing on a single subject, pupils explore broad themes, tackle real-world challenges and engage with questions that require curiosity, creativity and independent thought.
At the heart of the programme are the 4 Cs, which underpin all learning activities:
Critical Thinking
Analysing information, evaluating ideas and solving problems thoughtfully.
Creative Thinking
Generating new ideas, approaching challenges from different perspectives and developing innovative solutions.
Collaboration
Working effectively with others, sharing responsibilities and learning as part of a team.
Communication
Expressing ideas clearly and confidently through discussion, presentation and written work.
By developing these core skills, pupils become more reflective, resilient and adaptable learners, well prepared for the opportunities and challenges of the future.
How Is the Programme Structured?
The Discover Programme is delivered through a four-block carousel, allowing pupils to explore a different topic each term and experience a variety of learning approaches. This structure provides regular opportunities to develop new knowledge, strengthen key skills and engage with a wide range of subjects and challenges.
The skills introduced in Year 7 are revisited and extended in Year 8, enabling pupils to deepen their understanding and apply their learning with increasing confidence and independence.
